Closure of a waste recycling centre in the Hertfordshire town of Tring, has upset residents and councillors who say that they will now be forced to burn more petrol in their bid to be environmentally conscious.

Plans by the Hertfordshire County Council’s Waste Management Panel for the Tring site to close were slammed by Tring mayor Nick Hollinghurst.

He told Hemel Today local newspaper: "There is a huge amount of enthusiasm in Tring for recycling and the Tring tip has the highest recycling rate in the county. We should build on this to make recycling easier, not more difficult.

"The county proposals are a slap in the face for Tring’s environmentally-friendly citizens."

The county council has said that the plans are based on financial concerns and maintains that services will not be compromised.

But Cllr Hollinghust said: "County might save a bit of money, but the rest of us will pay for this by burning more petrol and suffering more flytipping."
