Bedfordshire waste management helps Ealing
Submitted on April 22, 2008
A waste management plant in Bedfordshire is turning leftovers and waste from as far as London into renewable energy.
Biogen’s anaerobic digestion plant receives recycled food waste from Ealing, the first London borough to participate in such a scheme, and turns it into compost and electricity.
The Twinwoods Integrated Anaerobic Digestion plant, which was opened last year by HRH the Princess Royal, is helping the London council reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
Ealing Council’s executive director of environment and customer services, Keith Townsend, told the Ealing Times: "Recycling rates have soared across the borough over recent months and it’s a great achievement for Ealing to be the first council to be recycling all of its food waste in the most environmentally efficient way possible."
Biogen is part of the eco-technology division of the Bedford Group of companies.
Its anaerobic digestion plant first became active in 2005 and generates enough electricity for 1,000 homes.
