£9m training college extension to teach green techniques

Submitted on May 27, 2008

A training college has planned a £9 million extension that is hoped will help the region become a centre for renewable energy.

Prospects College in Basildon, is to create a training centre for up to 225 apprentices on the site of a pork processing factory.

Chief executive of Prospects Learning Neil Bates told the Echo newspaper that as well as housing, plumbing and bricklaying training, the centre would offer the opportunity to learn about green construction and sustainability.

He said: "We will provide training in the use and applications of sustainable development and renewable energy, such as solar panels and ground source heat pumps."

Adam Keating, Basildon Renaissance Partnership spokesman, said he was pleased that the building would include renewable energy devices.

He said: "As part of the regeneration we have to make sure we are part of the green agenda and obviously this is a positive contribution.

"We hope this will get Basildon recognised as a centre for renewable energy."
