Cambridge environmentally-friendly studio in awards shortlist

Submitted on July 11, 2008

An eco-friendly architecture studio in Cambridge has been shortlisted in the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) East Spirit of Ingenuity Awards.

The building at Scroope Terrace, which is the home of Cambridge University’s Faculty of Architecture and History of Art, has recently undergone a major green refurbishment and expansion programme.

Natural materials were used in the project and efficient energy and construction systems were employed to minimise the building’s impact on the environment.

It is heated and cooled using innovative water-based systems and ground source heat pumps, cutting carbon emissions and reducing energy bills.

The studio is on the shortlist in two of the eight award categories - Education and Healthcare and Sustainability. Winners in each category will be announced ahead of the official awards ceremony on September 26th.

The awards are open to RIBA architects and practices in the east of England and celebrate the design innovations of those working within the region.

RIBA has over 2,000 members and 350 registered architectural practices in the east of England across the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
