Friends of the Earth welcomes consultation
The decision to focus on green tech such as anaerobic digestion during the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform’s renewable energy consultation has been applauded by a charity, according to a news site.
Recycling and Waste Management News and Information (RWMNI) reported that the Friends of the Earth senior campaigner Michael Warhurst welcomed the decision.
Mr Warhurst said: "The report is a good thing.
"But countries such as Germany are hugely ahead of us. Some EU countries have started to upgrade biogas into biomethane and inject it into their gas grids."
The consultation addressed the idea of how the UK can meet the renewable energy target of 15 per cent set by the European Union. It suggested local authorities collect food waste which, through using the process of anaerobic digestion, can be broken down into biogas.
Renewable Advisory Board member David Williams suggested the government pay more attention to emergy-from-waste incineration instead of anaerobic digestion.
The process involves micro-organisms breaking down biodegradable material and can help reduce landfill gas emissions into the atmosphere.
