A local authority has announced it is to advertise a waste treatment contract.

In a notification to the industry, Hertfordshire county council revealed it intends to offer a 400,000 tonnes per year waste treatment contract to cover its municipal rubbish, letsrecycle.com reports.

Derrick Ashley, executive member for waste at the organisation, said the contract will bring significant change to the way in which waste is treated in Hertfordshire, with as little of it as possible being sent to landfill.

He commented: "Our residents have told us that is their priority. We hope the waste industry will come and talk to us about ways they can help us to deliver that new approach."

Providing the authority secures cabinet approval for the scheme, it hopes to lodge a final business case for £100 million of private finance initiative funding to the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs by the end of October.

Elsewhere in the east of England, the Peterborough Evening Telegraph recently reported that the city has given a boost to its recycling, introducing new green bins into its centre to reduce the volume of reusable materials being sent to landfill.
