Recycling bins installed in city centre

A series of new recycling bins have been introduced into Peterborough’s city centre.

In a bid to encourage the city’s residents to recycle more and reduce the amount of rubbish being taken to landfill sites, green bins have been installed, Peterborough Today reports.

Bins for empty drinks cans and plastic bottles are to be installed in Bridge Street, enabling passers-by to recycle their receptacles while on the move.

Senior community engagement officer at the city council Kristy Martin explained that thousands of drinks are consumed in the city centre, with most of the bottles and cans dumped in rubbish bins and transferred to landfill sites.

"We hope the new bins will encourage a change of behaviour and help people make recycling a natural part of everyday life, no matter where they are," she said.

In related news, free environmentally-friendly bags were distributed at Huntingdon Farmers’ Market this weekend.
