Tesco has been applauded for its efforts to reduce its environmental impact, it has emerged.

The supermarket behemoth has received the Barclays Environmental Leadership Award at the Business in the Community Awards for Excellence 2008, the Green Building Press reports.

By devising and applying an effective environmental strategy across the country, Tesco has received praise for a variety of its initiatives.

One of these is its efforts to recycle, which has been demonstrated in Peterborough through the installation of a Recycling Service Unit at the city’s store.

Other efforts include submitting planning permission for a biomass plant in Livingston and a wind turbine in Daventry, as well as using straw as an alternative fuel to provide its heating and electricity at the Goole Distribution Centre.

Community and government director David North said: "We’ve set ourselves stretching targets to reduce the carbon intensity of our business and energy from renewable sources is a key part of our strategy.

"We’ve identified five sites that would be suitable for further biomass technology and are making big investments in wind turbines too."

Peterborough has made the news recently for its new recycling initiative, which has seen green bins installed in the city centre to collect bottles and cans for recycling.
