East of England unis get grants to help business go green

Submitted on August 6, 2008

East of England universities have had an application approved for funds for a scheme which encourages businesses to engage with academic hubs on low-carbon issues.

The University of Cambridge prepared the successful application for £628,000 for the 1-10 Low Carbon Transfer project, which will involve 11 of the region’s universities, including the University of East Anglia.

Funding goes to support a "taster scheme" that will give regional businesses an opportunity to sample the advice and expertise that the universities have in the low-carbon sector.

Together with a European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grant of £2.1 million for the Resource Efficiency East, this scheme will boost businesses’ environmental performance.

David Morrall, the East of England Development Agency’s European programmes director, said: "The new £3m of funding in the region, the first two grants made under the ERDF programme, will help small businesses go low carbon.

"The funding will take forward the plans in the government’s recent Renewable Energy Strategy. Both the REE and i-10 projects represent innovative ways of developing regional businesses through low-carbon initiatives. I look forward to seeing the fruits of these schemes."
