Suffolk MP John Gummer called for a new energy strategy to meet the needs of the county following the announcement of massive price hikes by energy firms.

Following the news that British Gas raised prices by 35 per cent, gummer called on the government to move beyond a strategy that depends on fossil fuels.

Mr Gummer, MP for Suffolk Coastal praised examples of moving to new technologies such as Ipswich Borough Council’s consideration of the use of wind turbines.

He told the Evening Star: "I think Ipswich Borough Council has shown significantly advanced leadership on this front and other councils in Suffolk ought to take very seriously what Ipswich is doing."

Though his call to reduce dependency on fossil fuels will be welcomed by environmental campaigners, some of his plans to meet energy demand will not be as popular.

"We need to maximise the use of renewable energy and build a Sizewell C."

Prime minister Gordon Brown equally seems to be open to the nuclear route, despite research suggesting that if the renewable energy construction targets are met, it will supply the needed energy.
