A new university building with a green roof is set to open to students in six months.

The University Campus Suffolk’s (UCS) £25 million building on Ipswich’s Waterfront has a sloping green roof coated in sedum plants which filters rain run off.

As well as helping rain water management, the green roof helps cut energy costs.

Tony Russell, head of facilities management for UCS, told EADT: "Firstly it is great insulation and helps the overall running cost and secondly from an environmental point of view it will really bring the whole place to life.

"It is really going to be a talking point - the whole building will be. It just makes another statement about UCS. We do things differently and this is definitely going to be iconic."

The university, which will be the first such establishment in the county, is set to open in September, with project director of Willmot Dixon contractor saying "things are going well".
