Sizewell plans for new nuclear plant

Norfolk residents have been invited to see plans for a new nuclear power station at Sizewell.

Following the government’s announcement that a new generation of nuclear plants would be needed to meet energy needs, British Energy is to consult on the potential for the construction of a Sizewell C.

The government has also announced that any plans for new power stations will have to have a fund for decommissioning and waste costs.

John Hutton, business secretary said energy companies would have to publish plans for fully decommissioning plants before construction begins to avoid passing the cost onto tax payers.

He said: "Let me be clear - full means full. Funds will be sufficient, secure and independent, it will be a criminal offence not to comply with the approved arrangements and we are taking powers to guard against unforeseen shortfalls."

Meanwhile, British Energy, which administrated Sizewell B is to inform the public of new building plans.

A spokesman told the EDP: "Although there is still much work to be done before decisions on siting and technology are made, British Energy is keen to keep people informed on the decision making process and to hear views on the impact this may have on the area."
