Carbon positive wall and panel system (I)

This product is made of fibres from industrial hemp mixed with lime. It is excellent for building in conjunction with timber- or steel-framed construction and for insulation. Among its benefits, the product:

  • Uses an annually renewable crop
  • Has excellent thermal and acoustic properties; U Value of 0.23 is a third lower than 2006 Part L requirements
  • Sequestrates and locks up carbon – about 110 kg / m3 of wall
  • Uses less energy to manufacture than concrete blocks; saves a significant proportion of the 200 kg / m2 (40 tonnes / wall) emitted for standard house wall
  • Can use local chalk and earth for on-site manufacture
  • Is cost-competitive with conventional construction techniques
  • Is produced in a zero waste process and is easily recyclable
  • High performance and materials points under Sustainable Code for Homes.

The technology was used for the walls of a new logistics centre in Suffolk, England. It can be specified now.
